Chocolate...What’s Not to Love
It is that time of year when love is in the air. And nothing quite says love like chocolate. And with chocolate, the more the better! Since December 26th, stores have stocked the shelves with all kinds of chocolate goodies.
Now not all chocolate is created equal so when we wanted to find the very best, we headed to the chocolate experts at Kilwins. And let us tell you, it was love at first whiff. Simply walking up to the store, you are surrounded by sweet smelling deliciousness. And it is enough to make your heart flutter. We were immediately drawn to their Valentine’s Day Truffle Assortment. The gorgeous heart shaped box is filled with the decadent flavors of Kilwins’ signature Extraordinary Everyday Truffles. Plus, they offer a variety of sizes to choose from. Our motto is to go big! And while you are there, do not forget to indulge yourself with a sweet treat of Kilwins’ homemade fudge. There are so many flavors to choose from that we dare you to pick just one!
While you are strolling around Destin Commons getting your sweet on, stop by Destination Little Donuts. Everybody loves a great donut and Destination Little Donuts has perfected the art of donut making. They expertly cook the donuts to perfection in small batches throughout the day, so they are fresh and delicious. Then the donuts are dipped in icing and topped with a variety of delectable toppings. Our personal favorite...Death by Chocolate of course!
Maybe you are wanting to create a special evening with you loved one and thought you would try making a sweet treat. Chocolate Dipped Strawberries are always a favorite and easy enough for even the cooking challenged. Since we are all eagerly anticipating the opening of Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen here at Destin Commons, we thought we would share her quick and easy recipe for Chocolate Dipped Strawberries. And to make it even easier, you can purchase the supplies at Whole Foods Market because let’s face it- their strawberries are beautiful!
1-pound (about 20) strawberries with stems, washed and dried very well
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
Step One: Rinse, but do not hull the strawberries. Drain and pat completely dry.
Step Two: Put the semisweet chocolate into heatproof medium bowls. Fill medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Turn off the heat; set the bowls of chocolate over the water to melt. Stir until smooth. Once the chocolates are melted and smooth, remove from the heat. Line a sheet pan with parchment or waxed paper.
Step Three: *Cook's Note: Alternatively, melt the chocolates in a glass dish in the microwave on high power for 60 seconds. Remove, stir and microwave for 10 seconds more until the chocolate has melted. Allow the chocolate to cool slightly to thicken.
Step Four: Holding the strawberry by the stem, dip the bottom half of each strawberry in the melted chocolate. Twist the strawberry so that the chocolate forms a "tail" at the end. Set strawberries on the parchment paper. Repeat with the remaining strawberries.
Step Five: Eat and enjoy with a delicious wine of the choice from Whole Foods Market. Their selection is out of this world!
We admit that we are a bit chocolate obsessed, but the truth is that chocolate simply makes life tastier. As Charles M. Schulz said, “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” We could not have said it any better!
