Ahhh...fitness and healthy eating. If you are anything like us, then you had more than your fair share of Christmas cookies, eggnog and anything else that was high in calories, fat, and DELICIOUSNESS. But a new year means a fresh start and typically most people say that they want to get healthy. This is a wonderful goal and Destin Commons wants to help you see your goal through to the end.

Now, do not distress. We believe in moderation and not going completely overboard as you start this new journey. To continue your journey, you need to adopt a healthy eating lifestyle as well. Fitness and healthy eating go hand in hand. And there is no shortage of diets from which to choose. Paleo, gluten-free, vegan, etc.… This list goes on and on and every time you look there is a new fad. Whole Foods Market can help you no matter whichever diet/lifestyle you choose. And let’s face it, the basic drill is the same: fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, reduce your sugar intake, reduce your carbohydrate intake and stay away from processed foods. We found a couple of our favorite healthy recipes from Whole Foods Market for you to try. These are delicious and might even make you forget that you are eating healthy.

Coconut Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients:

• 2 tablespoons coconut oil
• 2 pounds sweet potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks
• ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
• ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1 teaspoon lime zest

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a small saucepan, melt the coconut oil over medium heat. Toss the potatoes with oil, salt and pepper together in a large bowl until evenly coated. Spread potatoes in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet. Roast, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 40 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl and toss with lime zest.

Nutritional Information:

Per Serving: 190 calories (45 from fat), 5g total fat, 4.5g saturated fat, 330mg sodium, 32g carbohydrates, (6g dietary fiber, 10g sugar), 3g protein.

Spiced Almond Date Bites

Ingredients:

• 1 1/4 cup rolled oats
• 1 1/4 cup chopped pitted dates
• 1/2 cup no-salt-added unsweetened almond butter
• 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
• 1 teaspoon pure almond extract
• 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

Instructions:

Place oats, dates, almond butter, poppy seeds, almond extract and nutmeg in a food processor and process until smooth and sticking together. Drizzle in 2 to 3 tablespoons hot water so that the mixture comes into a ball. Using a teaspoon, scoop out a heaping spoonful of the mixture. Roll into a ball, pressing firmly so that it sticks together. Chill bites until ready to serve. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 week.
