Pumpkins, pumpkins, everywhere pumpkins

Did you ever wonder where the huge pumpkin spice trend started? Well, we have Starbucks to thank for the deliciousness of everything pumpkin! Read on for how the Seattle coffee giant achieved this.

Although Starbucks certainly did not invent the combination of coffee and pumpkin pie, they did introduce the now iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte back in 2003.  The first idea for a holiday-inspired drink was Starbucks’s Eggnog Latte, which premiered in 1986. So, the idea for holiday drinks had been around for over a decade, but was not revisited until 2002 when the Peppermint Mocha Latte came out. The success and popularity for the Peppermint Mocha turned out to be so high that Starbucks believed they could do it again. After a year of testing, a name change from Fall Harvest Latte, and an even bigger first-week success than the Peppermint Mocha, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has remained the top holiday drink bringing in more than $200 Million over the past decade.

Now, when you sip on your Pumpkin Spice Latte at  Starbucks, you can combine it with a pumpkin scone or a slice of  pumpkin bread. There is no such thing as too much pumpkin!

After years of continued success, the PSL has taken on a life of its own. What started out as a holiday espresso drink has now grown into a cultural phenomenon. Here are some of our pumpkin favorites that you can find in our stores at Destin Commons.
