Emerald Coast residents unite to finish the fight against breast cancerThe American Cancer Society hosted the Emerald Coast Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) kickoff rally and informational meeting Aug. 27 at La Famiglia in Destin Commons to share details about its upcoming community walk.
Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast served as the event sponsor. Guests were also surprised at the close of the kick-off event by the lighting of Destin Commons’ clock tower pink by TSC Productions in support of the cause.
“This event kicks off our team-building and fundraising each year for the MSABC event,” said Donna Fought, Emerald Coast MSABC event chairperson and breast cancer survivor. “Last year, approximately 5,000 Emerald Coast residents helped to raise more than $110,000. Each year, this kickoff provides community members the opportunity to learn how to get involved in the Emerald Coast Making Strides walk slated for Saturday, Oct. 17.”
Additional sponsors for the 2015 walk are Destin Commons, Coastal Bank and Trust, Gulf Power, Silver Sands Premium Outlets, Z96, Whataburger, Subway, Coast 93.3, Winn Dixie, WEAR, WFGX and Gulf Coast Chevy Dealers.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a powerful event to raise awareness and funds to end breast cancer. Since 1993, more than 11 million supporters have raised more than $685 million nationwide. “Uniting with others in the Making Strides walk gives us power to make a real difference in the fight to end breast cancer,” said Fought. “At the event we celebrate survivorship and pay a meaningful tribute to those affected by the disease.
Thanks to participants, the American Cancer Society is there for those who are currently dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether because of education and risk reduction.”
