Let the Good Times Roll!February 19, 2020
With Spring just around the corner, it is getting to be that time of year when events are “springing up” everywhere. Destin Commons is getting things rolling with our annual and crowd-pleasing Mardi Gras Masquerade. And just two days following that event, Hops for Hounds benefitting Dog-Harmony will be held for the first time at Destin Commons. Who else is ready for some fun?
Bring on the Beads
Let’s talk about Mardi Gras! This celebration seems to be making its presence known throughout the Emerald Coast with a variety of events and parades taking place. Have you ever wondered about the origins of Mardi Gras and just why this celebration is so popular in the modern era? Mardi Gras can be traced back to medieval Europe where the tradition of “Boeuf Gras” followed France to her colonies in North American in 1699. The French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at a location he named Point du Mardi Gras which is now Mobile, Alabama. That is correct, the first Mardi Gras in North America was not in New Orleans as many believe!
Here, at Destin Commons, we are ready with our beads and bling for our annual Mardi Gras Masquerade. This popular, family event will be held on Friday, February 21st from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Dancing in the streets will kick off the evening with New Orleans style jazz from The Funky Brass. Be sure to take advantage of the free face painting by Arts on the Beach and photo booth by Epic Photo Co. Then, head over to the Uniquely Clever art bus where kids can make Mardi Gras masks.
At 7:00 the streets will come alive as floats start rolling in. There will be plenty of beads, moon pies, and other throws for all to enjoy. This year, the King of Mardi Gras Masquerade will be Mr. Shervin Rassa, Chief Executive Officer of The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast and all-around great guy. He will be joined by his queen and beautiful wife, Michelle Rassa. Be sure to wave hello to our royalty and laissez les bon temps rouler!
Who Let the Dogs Out?
On Sunday, February 23rd after partying at Mardi Gras Masquerade, you may be looking for something a little more low-key but still great fun. Pop over to Destin Commons for the 3rd annual Hops for Hounds benefitting Dog-Harmony.
Your furry friend will love taking a walk through the property to each of the art murals. It is a must to snap a pic with you and your best Furever pal. Just be sure to tag #thedestincommons and who knows, we just may feature your photo. After your leisurely walk, hop over to World of Beer for a tail-wagging after-party with beer (for the humans) and live music. Your pup will enjoy their own menu from World of Beer! The fun kicks off at 10:30 AM and will last until 12:30 PM. Trust us, your dog will thank you with plenty of tail wags and sweet puppy kisses from bringing him to Hops for Hounds!
