Beating the Winter Blues

Does the colder weather have you feeling the winter blues? At this time of year, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) sets in. Yes, this is a very real thing that affects millions of people. So, if you are feeling fatigued, loss of concentration and low motivation then you are not alone. Luckily, we live in the Sunshine State, so we are fortunate to not have these conditions to contend with for extended periods of time. But there are things that you can do to help battle the winter blues.

Connect with Friends

One of the easiest ways to beat seasonal depression is to get out of the house and connect with your friends. Try planning a friend’s night out at Destin Commons with all your best friends. Get your Vitamin D and Fresh Air

Did you know that actually getting outside during the day and getting fresh air will help increase your energy, reduce your stress level, and improve your quality of sleep? It sounds like a win-win! We think just taking a stroll through the streets of Destin Commons is a perfect way to get some sun on your face and fresh air in your lungs. Plus, you can stop by Starbucks and grab a coffee beverage of choice! Or try the tea bar at The Spice & Tea Exchange if tea is more up your alley.

Eat Well

This might seem like a no brainer, right? During the colder months, we tend to partake in hearty comfort food and those certainly do make us feel better in the short term. But you need lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts as well. Just peruse the aisles at Whole Foods Market and you will find everything you need. Or try a healthy Mediterranean meal from Zoës Kitchen. Healthy and delicious!

Hygge

Hygge is defined at the Danish art of feeling cozy that is evoked by simple comforts. Simply put, enjoy the colder time to be wrapped in a blanket, playing a board game with your family, or even enjoying some much deserved “me” time. Two of our guilty pleasures is to light a candle and curl up with a good book. We have a couple of candles that easily rank as favorites and are very different from one another. Paris Café from Bath & Body Works and Capri Blue Volcano at Francesca’s. One takes you on a sensory experience to a café in France, while the other takes you to a sunny getaway with notes of sugared citrus and tropical fruits. You cannot go wrong with either. Next, stop by Books-a-Million and grab American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. This novel is fully endorsed by Oprah and Stephen King.
